Phil’s Weekend Wine Tip: Armas de Guerra Godello 2015 (SuperValu €12.99)

The north west of Spain already has it’s champion grape in the form of the fashionable Albariño from the Rias Baixas region. There is a lot more to this area though and Godello is a grape that has been trying to make it’s breakthrough in Ireland for a few years now. I first heard of this grape when I saw it pop up on a few wine lists and my personal opinion is that it can produce some excellent wines and is greatly under appreciated.

Godello produces wines that have the rich body of a Burgundian white wine, balanced with delicate and mineral flavours and a light freshness. This pretty much describes the Armas de Guerra Godello and makes it a great alternative to the usual suspects of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. Pear and light pineapple aromas on the nose, accompanied by a slight salinity that reminds me of sea air. The mouthfeel is full and rich, while the acidity gives it a zippy zest that compliments the light flavours of lemon, lime and grapefruit.

This is excellent value for money and shows the diversity in SuperValu‘s range. Make sure you serve this well chilled. A great food match with this Godello would be a fish based dish, especially shellfish with a nice buttery sauce  as this would compliment it perfectly due to the fuller body of the wine.
